Amandio Martins Cordeiro – A Lifetime Dedicated to Scouting
Armandio Cordeiro

Amandio’s journey in Scouting began in 1981 at just 11 years old, when he joined the 5th Kensington Scouts, now known as 1st São Jorge Scouts Group, then based at Marywell Hall in Bez Valley. He quickly rose through the ranks, first as an Assistant Patrol Leader and then as a Patrol Leader, leading his Buffalo patrol to success in various District Competitions, excelling in Cooking, Camping, and Pioneering.

His dedication to skill-building led him to complete the PLTU Patrol Leaders Training Course in 1986, along with several First Aid Courses and Competitions. The following year, he embarked on the Cederberg Adventure Hike, a challenging 10-day trek in the Cederberg Mountains, Western Cape. His journey in scouting also took him to Mossel Bay in 1988, where he represented the Dias Festival Youth Contingent, celebrating the 500th anniversary of Bartholomeu Dias’ landing in South Africa.

Amandio proudly represented 1st São Jorge at multiple South African Jamborees, where Scouts from across the country gathered to showcase leadership and teamwork. His commitment and achievements culminated in 1987 when, at just 17 years old, he earned the prestigious Springbok Award (Cavaleiro Da Pátria) —the highest accolade attainable in Scouting South Africa.

A Continued Legacy of Leadership

Even as an adult, Amandio remained deeply committed to Scouting. He served on the Parents Committee of the 1st Edenvale Scouts Group, fulfilling the role of Quartermaster from 2011 to 2016. In 2017, he returned to 1st São Jorge —now operating from Luso Africa Cultural and Sports Club in Primrose —where he officially became a Troop Scouter and took on the leadership of 15 Scouts, alongside his role as Chairperson of the Parents Committee.

His contributions and dedication were formally recognised in 2022, when he was awarded the 10-Year Adult Service Medal, a symbol of his commitment that he proudly wears on his Scout’s Shirt. Under his mentorship, 1st São Jorge continues to thrive, now supporting a growing group of 7 Meerkats (ages 4–6), 24 Cubs (ages 7–10), and Scouts (ages 11–17) .

Looking Ahead

Amandio’s vision for 1st São Jorge extends beyond its current successes—he is actively working to establish a Rover Crew for Scouts over 18, ensuring the continuity of leadership and mentorship within the group. His passion for community service and charitable projects remains at the heart of his work, fostering a culture of growth, responsibility, and teamwork within Scouting.
